Premiering their latest single on BBC Radio 1 yesterday evening was smooth indie 4 piece, The Magic Gang. The band return with their single How Can I Compete. The track is taken from the band’s third EP which is due for release in April of this year through Yala Records.
The Magic Gang’s sound is always familiar. Their serene, simple songs can be recognised by most from the get go. In How Can I Compete this familiarity in no way falters. However, this time round there is a more upbeat, bass driven feel. The song bounces up and down with a melodic and harmonious rapport and the energetic glide influences movement and subconscious dance moves. A punching chorus of vocals highlights a possible hostility within the piece. Although the instrumental appears somewhat cheerful, the lyrics tell a different contrasting tale.
There is an irresistible charm to The Magic Gang, which is showcased in this single. Despite the band’s array of songs, How Can I Compete might just be their best yet. A band on the rise and more than likely to be everywhere very soon.
